The Bamboo Finance team has many years of experience supporting social entrepreneurs on five continents.  The founder, Jean-Philippe de Schrevel, has proven a similar model when he built Blue Orchard Finance seven years ago, which has now attracted over USD700 Million directly to microfinance institutions from private investors and has inspired major commercial banks to serve microfinance institutions. Jean-Philippe de Schrevel, Founder & CEO

As the founder of Bamboo Finance, Jean-Philippe provides leadership and vision.  Previously, he co-founded BlueOrchard Finance in 2001 and has since remained a part of its management team. He joined Dexia Asset Management in 2000 as the Dexia Micro-Credit Fund Manager. Prior to that, he was Junior team economist in Romania for a EU PHARE technical assistance program, Field Consultant in Microfinance for a Belgian NGO, an Associate with McKinsey & Co, the Operations Director of a private Microfinance Foundation in Argentina, and finally a Consultant for the UNCTAD Microfinance Unit in Geneva. Jean-Philippe is fluent in French, Spanish and English. He holds a MA in Economics from Université Notre-dame de la Paix in Namur, Belgium, and a MBA from the Wharton School of Business.

 

 

Eric Berkowitz, Investment Executive

As a founding member of the team, Eric Berkowitz is developing the portfolio strategy for Bamboo Finance's clients.  Eric has over thirteen years of international business and social entrepreneurship experience in twelve countries.   Prior to joining Bamboo Finance, he was a Fellow with the Acumen Fund in China focused on developing social enterprises which increase healthcare access.  This included working with Broadreach Healthcare to set-up a chain of retail based primary care health clinics and with Scojo Foundation to sell affordable reading glasses in rural areas.  Previously he consulted on projects in  Asia and the US in the areas of microfinance, financial services and business development.  In microfinance his experience includes assisting a multinational bank to invest in the MF sectors of Indonesia and Pakistan, and developing a strategic business plan for SEWA Bharat in India.  In addition, he served as a director of the China office of Tractus-Asia, where he assisted foreign companies making investment decisions and setting up operations in East Asia, was a consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers, and an engineer at Cummins Engine Company.  Eric holds a BS in Mechanical and Aerospace engineering from Princeton University and an MBA from the Wharton School of Business.

 


Christian Schattenmann
, Director Finance

As a founding member of the team, Christian leads the administrative and operational management of Bamboo Finance.  Before joining Bamboo Finance, Christian was working as Director Finance at PACT, a German based Semiconductor Company. Prior to that, he was Investment Manager at the Venture Capital Group Pari Capital. Over the last 7 years he was directly involved – both on the buy and sell side – in structuring and implementing a wide range of financing instruments. Previously Christian has also worked for an international law firm with assignments in Munich, London and Buenos Aires. In 2003, he took a sabbatical to establish The Pangea Project, a non-profit organization promoting sustainable tourism structures in Central America. In the process he developed on-the-ground expertise in working with indigenous communities in Panama. Christian holds an MBA from IE Business School in Madrid, a Master of International Law degree from Université Panthéon-Assas in Paris and is a fully qualified lawyer in Germany. He is fluent in English, French, German and Spanish.


Keely Stevenson, Investment Executive

As a founding member of the team, Keely Stevenson is developing the  portfolio strategy for Bamboo Finance’s clients.   Keely has experience in investing in and supporting social entrepreneurs on five continents.  She joined Bamboo after living in East Africa and serving as a Fellow with the Acumen Fund, a global social venture fund.  She helped establish Acumen’s Nairobi office and provided management support to Acumen’s number one ranked investment (AtoZ Textile Mills- malaria bednets) on distribution and pricing strategies in Tanzania.  Earlier in her career, she was the first employee hired by the CEO of the Skoll Foundation where she designed grant programs for social entrepreneurs and led the team who created the world’s first online community for social entrepreneurs, Social Edge (www.socialedge.org). She has also served as the Interim Director of a social enterprise in Peru (ProPeru) and a start-up professional development program for social entrepreneurs in India (Social-Impact International).  She was a consultant on the viability of a UK based risk capital fund for Triodos Bank and economic development strategies for Africa’s wealthiest tribal community.  She has studied politics at UC Berkeley and her passion for social business led her to pursue an MBA degree at Oxford University.  She recently co-authored a publication on risk capital for social enterprises published by Oxford
